Our Sony Ericsson X10 Review
X10 Design
The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 is something completely new for Sony Ericsson. It is their first foray into a completely new way of making mobile phones. The old clunky Sony Eriksson with their limited functionalities are now a thing of the past as the Xperia X10 brings in a fast 1Ghz Snapdragon processor along with Google’s Android operating system with a custom theme.
The X10 Build
The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 is a huge beast. We mean this in the best sense as all that extra real estate is used up by a big screen. The set feels comfortable in your hands. However it seems that Sony Ericsson realized this phone may be too big for some people as it has announced it will be releasing two smaller cousins called the Xperia X10 mini and Xperia X10 mini pro.
The design also has sharp edges which gives it a somewhat different look than all the other category mobile phone. Instead of going for smooth, Sony Ericsson has gone for the futuristic look and suits nice. There are some multimedia controls on the right side. All in all, you can feel that it is high quality just by holding it in your hands. It feels solid.
The four inch screen uses capacitive technology which makes it extremely sensitive. Sensitive and precise which makes it a joy to use. This means the on screen keyboard is very easy to use and rarely misinterprets your touches. Same is true for all other gestures, they happen swiftly and accurately. This is because of the sensitive screen and the blazing fast 1GHz processor.
However one problem is that the Xperia X10 does not support multi touch, so there are now features like pinch to zoom which are available on almost all other sets. Even worse, this will not be fixed through any updates because according to Sony Ericsson multi touch is not supported because of a ‘hardware issue’ This is the biggest downside of the phone.
Performance
The extremely fast 1GHz snapdragon processor really works wonders with the android platform. All applications and the operating system itself run very fast and smooth. There is also 1gb on internal space plus the option to use microSD cards up to 16gb. A 2gb card is included.
While the operating system is Android, it is not the default android as Sony Ericsson as tweaked and modified it to present a unique interface. There are two different UIs, one is called timescape and other is called mediascape. Timescape focuses on communication including sms, calls, emails, facebook and twitter. You can set this as the homescreen instead of the default android homescreen.
Mediascape does a similar thing but for media files, it arranges them. Web browsing works great because Android’s great capable browser is combined with the 1 GHz processor which allows pages to load very fast. The camera takes stills of 8 megapixel and the interface is designed similar to Sony’s Cybershot cameras. It takes great pictures in daytime, much better than many of its competitors.
What We Liked
Big Screen. Fast Processor allows for smooth performance. Unique and useful interface
What We Disliked
No multi touch
The Final Verdict
This is a great handset if you like features like social networking. It is also great when it comes to media handling. The camera is also great as it usually is with Sony Ericsson handsets. All in all, this is the best mobile phone Sony Ericsson has released till now and we are impressed by it.
