Our Nokia X6 Review

Looking at the Nokia X6, we were tempted to look for its slider feature. While the design gives off the illusion of sliding action, the Nokia X6 is in fact a candy bar handset. This illusion is directly derived from the Nokia X6’s dimensions – at 13.8 mm thickness, you tend to expect more. Available in blue on white and red on black, the Nokia X6 is chic and colourful. Its design follows that of the Nokia XpressMusic models, making it a big hit with the ladies out there.

Screen

The Nokia X6’s 3.2-inch screen gives the handset a true edge. In fact, it competes fiercely with that of Apple’s iPhone. The capacitive screen enables the user to browse the internet or type in messages without any trouble. Unlike many of the resistive screens out in the market, the Nokia X6 responds to light taps with your index. The screen’s colours are pure joy for any multimedia fan, as the colours are vibrant, dynamic, sharp, and beautifully contrasted. We were delighted with the screen’s performance in different environments as it auto-adjusts brightness levels for ideal viewing.

User Interface

The Nokia X6’s user interface is simple yet confusing at times. This of course is due to the lack of consistency with different commands. For example, we found that some menus only require that you press with your index. Others needed a press and a second tap. We would’ve loved for the user interface to be more straightforward with its actions. Our performance tests came back positive for applications, as they loaded rapidly. However, we found that syncing and loading were slow for a handset like the Nokia X6. One perk is the Nokia Ovi store where you can install games and applications for your handset.

Keypad

Since the Nokia X6 is a touchscreen handset, a physical keypad is nowhere to be found. The only buttons we found are the function buttons (call, end, shutter release, volume rocker, and slider lock switch). The virtual keyboard is not what we expected. We would’ve loved a full QWERTY keyboard for typing messages and emails. What we loved about the Nokia X6’s virtual keyboard is its accuracy and speed. It comes as a definite advantage when compared with previous Nokia models. You can type without the hassle of stopping every two seconds to delete a letter or two.

Camera and Multimedia

The Nokia X6 comes with a 5 MP camera equipped with a dual LED flash. The flash comes handy in poor lighting conditions. We were able to capture great photos at night without the colours looking washed out. We loved capturing photos as the camera’s user interface is simple and quick – we didn’t notice any lagging while saving or loading photos.

In the multimedia department, the Nokia X6 excels with its music and video playback. The audio quality is crisp and easy on the ear, and the screen provides lively video quality. We fell in love with its 32 GB storage that left us downloading videos and songs nonstop. For a music collection owner, it is easy to sync with Windows Media Player and to create playlists. Playlist DJ is yet another fantastic feature that enables you to create playlists according to your mood. You can save up to four moods that you can play with a click. Video playback is excellent, though we had some troubles navigating between videos due to some interface lag.

Connectivity and Battery Life

One thing that caught our eye with the Nokia X6 is its superb web browsing experience. Not only did Nokia make the viewing process as easy as loading a page on a normal desktop, but they also incorporated a reliable accelerometer for landscape orientation. This feature, however; did come at a cost as the screen often froze with large pages filled with complex elements such as flash or forms.

In terms of connectivity, the Nokia X6 provides a complete bundle of 3G HSDPA, Bluetooth A2DP, Wi-Fi, and USB 2.0. Using Nokia’s PC Suite, we were able to sync different files and emails with our laptop.

Nokia never disappoints us in the battery life area, as the Nokia X6 brings unlimited hours of music playback, Wi-Fi surfing, and file sharing without the battery dying out.

What We Liked

We liked the Nokia X6’s battery life, dynamic screen, and multimedia features.

What We Disliked

We disliked the Nokia X6’s performance and freezes when web surfing and lack of consistency in the user interface’s menu taps.

Our Final Verdict

The Nokia X6 brings value into the life of any multimedia lover. It comes as a complete bundle of joy with its connectivity features, capacitive touchscreen, and fantastic audio and video quality. The Nokia X6’s camera is an ideal partner for people capturing photos at night or in poor lighting conditions. We recommend this handset for anyone looking for a reliable, feature packed handset that is simple to operate and maintain.
