Our Nokia 6700 Review
Design
The moment we saw the Nokia 6700, we instantly realized how Nokia became a top brand: simple, solid and feature-packed build. Made from glossy metal, the Nokia 6700 gives off a feel of a military tank; you feel its bulk in your palm and in your pockets at all times, although it’s slightly lighter from previous handsets in the same line. Available in silver and black, the Nokia 6700 is made from top notch durable materials. The surface, however; is a magnet for fingerprints and smudges.
Screen
At 2.2in, the Nokia 6700’s screen brings stunning performance. With a 16 million colour, 240x320 resolution, we felt the images rendered are sharp, saturated, and properly contrasted in different lighting conditions - even in direct sunlight.
User Interface
The Nokia 6700’s user interface is among our favorites in the market. The new improved home screen enables the user to easily access the features present. It comes with great visual improvements for the user and an Active Standy home screen showing your appointments, messages, and other important items. A shortcut bar at the top enables you to access the features you need with ease.
Keypad
The Nokia 6700’s keypad is a bit rough around the edges. The numerical and navigational buttons are not easily clicked, especially the upper and lower buttons. Overall, the keypad isn’t a winner when typing in messages. On the right side, you’ll find the standard camera shutter and volume rocker buttons. The camera shutter is a great improvement from other Nokia models where it’s a feat to click the tiny button.
Camera & Multimedia
The Nokia 6700 sports a 5.0 Megapixel camera with LED flash. For speed images, expect the best from the Nokia 6700’s camera. Its interface has rapid response rates and its autofocus enables you to capture multiple shots with speed and clarity. Between shooting, loading, and saving, there is a stunning 4 second lag – something Nokia takes prides in. Photos look great in both good and poor-lit areas, it always performs above average in direct sunlight. One thing to watch out for is the colour saturation and contrast in certain shady areas, where you’ll feel the colours are washed out and the contrast not quite high.
Video capture is no different. You can easily shoot videos with impressive focus a resolution of 640x480 resolution. The Nokia 6700’s video capture isn’t the best in the market, but definitely better than many embedded in the handsets out there.
The media player and FM radio are average in performance; pale when put against other Nokia handsets. It supports unusual file types such as MPEG-4; playing them at 30 frames per second. We weren’t disappointed with the video playback.
Connectivity and Battery Life
The Nokia 6700’s connectivity options are impressive for its price tag: 3G HSDPA, WAP, EDGE, UMTS, Bluetooth, and USB. One missing connectivity standard is the built-in Wi-Fi, that of course made us pout a little, but using the web browser made us happy again. The web browser supports full HTML and loads pages in a jiffy. You can easily watch YouTube videos and surf the internet.
One thing that caught our eye is the lack of Macintosh support. You cannot sync with other Macs around – something unusual for a handset at such a price tag.
The Nokia 6700’s built-in GPS is a bit problematic, switching to A-GPS got us on a roll and it definitely did not disappoint. We could easily use the new Nokia Maps (Ovi Maps) pinpointing our location and several other places.
The Nokia 6700’s battery competes nicely with other mid-range handsets in the market. At 5 hours talk time, and 300 hours standby, you can surf, talk and enjoy music charging your cell phone every 2-3 days.
What We Liked
The 6700’s simple user interface, screen performance and great connectivity integration.
What We Disliked
The lack of Wi-Fi integration, non-standard sound jack, lack of Mac integration.
Our Final Verdict
The Nokia 6700 is a catch for any browsing addicts at this price tag. The handset doesn’t excel in audio and music playback. Its user interface, connectivity options, and A-GPS integration will make your life a breeze if you’re on the move.
