Nokia 5230

3 PhonesThe Nokia 5230’s battery life is commendable. We loved testing the handset as we didn’t have to recharge even with the most complex tasks of playing music, surfing the internet, and downloading an application.

The One Plan
Currently, Three's most extension price plan. The only One you are likely to need, this '3' price plan gives you 2,000 (yes 2,000!) anytime, any network minutes, 5,000 Texts, 1GB internet usage and 5,000 minutes of calls to other 3 mobiles each month.
Internet Talker Plans
A price plan which gives you flexibility, Internet Talker plans don't tie you to a set number of texts and set number of minutes each month. As with Three's previous With Mix & Match plans, you receive a monthly allowance, which you are free to use for texts, minutes or any combination of the two. This is ideal if you find your minutes and text usage fluctuates month by month causing you to exceed either your monthly text or minutes allowance.
But Wait! There's more. Internet Talker also gives you 500MB Internet usage and 5,000 Three-to-Three minutes each month.

Our Nokia 5230 Review
Design
The Nokia 5230, the latest touchscreen smartphone from Nokia and features the Symbian S60 operating system. Available in a choice of interchangeable covers (front and back) make the 5230 versatile as users are sure to find a combination to match his/her personality.
Screen
Nokia’s choice of screen size corresponds to its young audience. The 3.2-inch touchscreen matches the look and feel of an iPhone’s screen. On the downside, the Nokia 5230 did not manage to win this race as its screen is resistive – not as easy to press and navigate with when compared with the iPhone’s capacitive, sensitive screen. The image quality radiates with colour and sharpness in normal lighting conditions. Under direct sunlight, visibility is drastically reduced which was disappointing to us given that young customers are always on the move outdoors.
User Interface
Although the Nokia 5230 is almost identical with the Nokia 5800 in terms of look and feel, its user interface is directly lifted from the Nokia 5520 XpressMusic handset. This smartphone’s user interface comes with noticeable performance improvements and features. For example, the built-in accelerometer is more responsive and reliable when compared with that of previous Nokia models. One thing that caught our eye is the home screen that had to undergo a major transformation to become touch-friendly. One example is the fact that some icons were eliminated to make it easier to press and click. This transformation facilitated our work it took us one or two presses to reach our calendar appointments, set an alarm, or change the current profile while in a meeting.
Keypad
As we’ve mentioned earlier, the Nokia 5230 is identical with the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic in terms of design and layout. The layout is quite simple equipped with the standard function buttons (call, end call, and menu). We missed the stylus from this handset, which was quite confusing given that the simplest way to remove the SIM card from the side compartment is through the handset’s stylus. The on-screen QWERTY keyboard is a breeze for those accustomed to typing email using a BlackBerry or iPhone. One perk that comes with the Nokia 5230 is its handwriting recognition feature that enabled us to draw letters with ease using the handwriting tutorial.
Camera and Multimedia
After testing out the Nokia 5230’s handwriting feature, we were anxious to capture some pictures and send them to our friends. Using the 2 MP camera wasn’t anything to brag about, as the image quality is average with no auto-focus or LED flash available. The camera’s user interface is cluttered and far from being user-friendly.
The after effects such as sharpness, brightness and contrast, and white balance can enhance photos but won’t give the user a miraculous cure for the average camera quality. After capturing some photos, it was time for us to put the Nokia gallery to the test. While the user interface is flexible, the speed of loading photos is not impressive.
We loved listening to our favourite tracks using the Nokia 5230’s music player. The player excelled both in high key and low key beats with distinct resonance. The music library is automatically sorted out by album, artist, and genre upon syncing with a desktop. Video playback did not disappoint us, as we were able to view video clips with crisp, dynamic clarity. However, we would’ve loved for the Nokia 5230 to support DivX and XviD videos.
Connectivity and Battery Life
In terms of connectivity, the Nokia 5230 is a steady performer with 3G HSDPA, GPRS, EDGE, Bluetooth, and USB support. We were a bit shocked that it lacks Wi-Fi connectivity as it is a must in this age. Another thing we’ve missed is the data cable. The Nokia 5230’s web browser provides decent usability for the average web surfer. We didn’t find the browser to be a deal breaker although it does come with kinetic scrolling. Most pages are rendered correctly with elements clear and easily accessed.
The Nokia 5230’s battery life is commendable. We loved testing the handset as we didn’t have to recharge even with the most complex tasks of playing music, surfing the internet, and downloading an application.
What We Liked
We liked the Nokia 5230’s hip design, audio and video playback, and user friendly interface.
What We Disliked
We disliked the Nokia 5230’s lack of Wi-Fi integration and data cable, and its average camera performance.
Our Final Verdict
The Nokia 5230 is a reliable handset at a great price tag. It combines high-end features with a med-low price range. We loved carrying out Nokia 5230 around as it radiates with its hip design and colours. While the Nokia 5230 lacks Wi-Fi integration, it still makes a great handset for anyone looking for a 3G mobile phone at an affordable rate.
